Wallper or Backdrop for Mac? How to pick the one to buy
Choose Wallper for a one-time $14.99 licence covering 3 Macs and macOS 14.6+; choose Backdrop for its community library, playlists and no-time-limit trial (macOS 15+, €29.99 lifetime). Neither runs on macOS 13, and the vendors contradict each other on Lock Screen. Checked 7 October 2026.
Pick Wallper if battery, a macOS 14 Mac or a one-time price matter most: $14.99 once, for 3 Macs, from macOS 14.6. Pick Backdrop if you want a community library, playlists and a trial that never expires: €29.99 lifetime, from macOS 15. Neither runs on macOS 13. The two vendors also contradict each other on facts a buyer needs, so each vendor claim below says whose it is and was checked on 7 October 2026.

Does macOS already do what you want before you pay for either?
Partly. Apple says its aerial wallpapers “animate as you lock or unlock your Mac”, and a screen saver can keep moving while the Mac is idle. What Apple’s wallpaper guide does not describe is your own video looping behind your windows, the gap both apps sell into. Try the built-in option for five minutes first.
- Open System Settings and click Wallpaper in the sidebar.
- Pick one of Apple’s aerial wallpapers (landscapes, cities, underwater scenes, Earth). If a download icon shows, download it first.
- Lock and unlock the Mac to watch it move, then click Screen Saver, as Apple’s screen-saver guide describes, to see what plays when the Mac is idle.
If that motion is enough, stop here: it is free and needs no third-party app.
Which one should you buy? A decision table by type of user
Wallper for battery, a macOS 14 Mac and a one-time price; Backdrop for a community library, playlists and, if Cindori’s claim holds on your Mac, Lock Screen video on macOS 15; neither on a Mac stuck on macOS 13. Each row says whose statement it rests on.
| Your situation | Lean towards | Why (attributed) | Check before paying |
|---|---|---|---|
| Battery-first MacBook | Wallper | Its docs: playback pauses on battery by default. Backdrop’s page mentions only “further optimizations” on battery power. | Watch the app in Activity Monitor unplugged |
| Your own videos | Either | Wallper: drag in an MP4, included in trial and Pro. Backdrop: built in its editor, counted among the trial’s 3 watermarked scenes. | Clip size: Backdrop advises lowering quality from 200 MB |
| Lock Screen video, macOS 26 or 27 | Either | Both state support; on macOS 27 Wallper says it needs version 1.9 or later. | Test unlock and wake from sleep |
| Lock Screen video, macOS 15 | Backdrop, if its claim holds | Wallper says macOS 26. Cindori says Backdrop works from 15, yet its support page says compatibility “may vary”. | Backdrop’s no-time-limit trial first |
| Tightest budget | Wallper, or Backdrop’s trial | $14.99 once for 3 Macs against €29.99 lifetime; Backdrop’s trial never expires but is capped and watermarked. | Two currencies: no comparison by eye |
| Mac limited to macOS 14 | Wallper | Floor 14.6 for Wallper, 15.0 for Backdrop. | Apple’s list for your model (table below) |
| Community library, playlists | Backdrop | Cindori: thousands of community scenes, 24 collections, scheduled playlists. | Browsing needs an iCloud account |
| Mac stuck on macOS 13 | Neither | Both floors are higher. | Apple’s aerials, or the third option last |
“Lean towards” is not a verdict. We found no independent test of the two apps: the pages ranking for this question are the vendors’ own roundups.
Where do Wallper’s and Backdrop’s own pages contradict each other?
On four points a buyer needs, and no independent source we found settles any of them. Each side is quoted from its own page, checked on 7 October 2026.
| Point | Wallper’s side | Cindori’s side (Backdrop) | Verify before paying |
|---|---|---|---|
| Backdrop’s minimum macOS | Wallper’s roundup (2 August 2026) lists macOS 14. | The download page, the requirements page and the home FAQ say macOS 15. | The download page, then Apple’s list for your Mac |
| Backdrop’s Lock Screen floor | The same roundup lists it at “macOS 26+”. | Cindori’s guide (updated 30 September 2026) says macOS 15 Sequoia and later; its support page says “macOS version compatibility may vary”. | The lock, unlock and sleep test in Backdrop’s trial |
| “First and only” on the Lock Screen | Wallper’s site calls itself “the first and only app” to bring native live wallpapers to the Mac Lock Screen. | Cindori’s 3 September 2025 news post made the same claim for Backdrop; Backdrop’s home page no longer words it that way. | Treat both as marketing: they cannot both be true |
| Backdrop’s currency | Wallper’s roundup quotes Backdrop in dollars. | The store says “All prices are in Euros”, while the download page shows “$1.99 /month”. | The price at checkout in your country |
Each section below that depends on one of these points says whose claim it is.
Which macOS does each need, and what is the newest your Mac can run?
Wallper starts at macOS 14.6 and Backdrop at 15.0, so a Mac whose newest compatible macOS is Ventura 13 can run neither. Wallper’s FAQ says it “runs on macOS 14.6 Sonoma and newer, up to macOS 26”, on Apple silicon and Intel. Backdrop’s requirements page says “macOS 15.0 (Sequoia) or later” and “All Mac models running macOS 15.0 or later”, advising an Apple silicon (M1) Mac “for optimal performance”.
The real limit is the newest macOS your Mac can install. The table follows Apple’s lists for Ventura, Sonoma, Sequoia and Tahoe 26.
| Example Mac (Apple’s naming, shortened) | Newest macOS on Apple’s lists | Wallper / Backdrop on the desktop | Lock Screen video (vendor claims) |
|---|---|---|---|
| MacBook Pro (13-inch, 2017) | macOS Ventura 13 (on Ventura’s list, not Sonoma’s) | Neither | None |
| MacBook Air (Retina, 13-inch, 2018) | macOS Sonoma 14 (on Sonoma’s list, not Sequoia’s) | Wallper only (needs 14.6) | None: Wallper’s floor is macOS 26 |
| MacBook Pro (15-inch, 2018) | macOS Sequoia 15 (not on Tahoe 26’s list) | Both | Backdrop only, per Cindori |
| MacBook Pro (16-inch, 2019), Intel | macOS Tahoe 26; macOS 27 needs Apple silicon | Both | Both |
| MacBook Air (M1, 2020) | macOS 27 (“an M1 chip or newer”, per MacRumors); also on Tahoe 26’s list | Both | Both (Wallper 1.9+ on macOS 27) |
Apple marks its Ventura page as archived and no longer updated, so read it as a historical list. On macOS 27, Eclectic Light (14 September 2026) writes that it “requires an Apple silicon Mac” and MacRumors (20 August 2026) that it is “limited to Apple silicon Macs with an M1 chip or newer”, so an Intel Mac stops at macOS 26 (see our Intel and Tahoe guide). Backdrop says it “fully supports macOS 27 Golden Gate”; Wallper’s 1.9 release note (27 July 2026) says Lock Screen video on macOS 27 needs Wallper 1.9+. Vendor statements, not tests.
Lock Screen video: what does each vendor document, and how do you test it?
Both vendors say their wallpapers can play on the Lock Screen. Wallper gives a clear floor: its guide says Lock Screen video “currently requires macOS 26 or later”. Backdrop’s support pages say its wallpapers “appear in the macOS System Settings just like native video wallpapers” and stay animated on the Lock Screen even if you pause the desktop, but they name no floor, hence the dispute above.
Wallper’s guide has you enable “Use Lock Screen & Screensaver” in its settings, set a wallpaper again, then find its extension block under System Settings and Wallpaper; Backdrop asks you to toggle “Enable Lock Screen”. Those two labels belong to the apps, not to macOS.
A fair test is free, since both offer trials: install one app, set a wallpaper, lock, unlock, sleep and wake the Mac, then repeat with the other. Backdrop documents turning its Lock Screen support off before uninstalling, so do that first.
What does each cost, and what do you get free before paying?
Wallper has no permanent free tier: seven days of every Pro feature with no card, then $14.99 once for up to 3 Macs. Backdrop’s trial has no time limit but stops at 3 watermarked scenes; paid access is €1.99 a month, €14.99 a year or €29.99 lifetime.
Mind the currencies. Wallper charges in US dollars: its pricing page shows a euro estimate (€13.37 for Pro on 7 October, €12.87 on 29 August) that it calls approximate, and adds sales tax at checkout. Backdrop’s store says all prices are in euros, without saying whether tax is included. We never convert between them.
| Option | Price | What it covers | Refund terms |
|---|---|---|---|
| Wallper trial | $0 for 7 days, no card | Every Pro feature; the app then locks until you buy | Nothing to cancel: no auto-charge |
| Wallper Pro | $14.99 once | Up to 3 Macs at once, lifetime updates | 14 days, no justification required |
| Backdrop trial | €0, no time limit | Up to 3 watermarked backdrops, your own included | Not applicable |
| Backdrop subscription | €1.99/month or €14.99/year | The licence key expires if not renewed | 14 days, only before activation |
| Backdrop lifetime | €29.99 once | “All future updates” and no upgrade fees, as worded on 7 October 2026 | 14 days, only before activation |
Inside one currency the arithmetic is safe: three years of Backdrop monthly is 36 × €1.99 = €71.64, yearly 3 × €14.99 = €44.97, lifetime €29.99. Wallper’s Pro+ plan is $24.99 once, for 5 Macs.
Read two terms first. Backdrop’s store says that activating a licence “starts digital delivery and ends your withdrawal/refund right”, so finish testing before you activate; it does not say how many Macs one licence covers. Wallper’s Terms allow up to three personal macOS devices. Neither app is on the Mac App Store, where an unrelated app also called Backdrop is sold.
Your own videos: both import them, with different limits
Wallper takes any MP4 (H.264 or HEVC) by drag and drop, and custom video is included in the 7-day trial and in Pro. Backdrop builds a custom scene in its editor (“Create”, then “Editor”, then “Add Video File” or drag and drop, in its guide); the scene is private by default, optionally shareable, and counts against the three watermarked ones in the free trial. Backdrop advises lowering quality only for files of 200 MB and above.
So “my clip as my wallpaper” costs the licence: $14.99 once with Wallper, €29.99 lifetime or a subscription with Backdrop. Our guide to setting a video as wallpaper on a Mac is the wider reference.
Battery and CPU: which one stops when you unplug?
Wallper documents that it does: playback pauses on battery by default and the last frame stays, with an opt-out in Preferences. Backdrop says it pauses behind full-screen apps and optimizes on battery power, without saying it stops. The CPU figures cannot be ranked.
Wallper’s performance page lists four stop conditions: a full-screen app, being unplugged, CPU load above about 80% and display sleep, so on battery you see a still image unless you change the setting. Cindori’s guide adds that Backdrop pauses “when your MacBook’s battery runs low”.
Backdrop reports 3% on a 10-core M1 Max MacBook Pro in Activity Monitor, which counts per core, hence its “less than 0.3%” claim. Wallper’s blog of 21 July 2026 reports a 1.46% average on a 10-core M4 Mac mini sampled with ps, a machine without a battery; its performance page gives “CPU ~4%” from internal tests. Different chips, tools and authors, and no independent test: measure on your own Mac, unplugged. Our MacBook battery guide covers the laptop side.
Library and discovery: about 3,000 wallpapers each, built differently
Both vendors claim roughly 3,000 wallpapers and review submissions, Wallper within “24–48 hours” for most, Backdrop in “a few days”. The counts are vendor figures, inconsistent even inside Wallper’s pages (“2900+” on pricing, “3,000+” in its roundup).
The shape differs. Wallper markets a hand-reviewed gallery, free to download without an account according to its roundup, that plays offline once applied; a typical 4K wallpaper is 20–80 MB. Backdrop markets community-made scenes with search filters, “24 collections in Discover” and playlists that schedule, shuffle or switch by mood.
Backdrop’s catch is the account: its requirements page says iCloud is required to browse and download community wallpapers and the account “must not be restricted (no parental controls)”; its troubleshooting page adds enterprise policies. Without iCloud you can still use Backdrop, but only with scenes you build yourself. On a school, work or family Mac, check that first.
Who should pick neither, and where does Mac+ fit?
Pick neither if your Mac cannot go past macOS 13, or if Apple’s lock-and-unlock motion is all you want. Mac+ is a third option with a very different shape, and it is our own app, so weigh this section accordingly.
Limits first. Mac+ has no Lock Screen support and no screen saver mode: it animates the desktop only. It has no downloadable or community library and no playlists. Its 15 scenes are abstract, computed on the GPU with Metal rather than played from video files, so it is not a catalogue like the roughly 3,000 wallpapers above. Your own video as wallpaper is a Pro feature, and it is a direct download, not a Mac App Store app.
What it offers: macOS 13 Ventura or later on Apple silicon and Intel, the only option here for a Mac stuck on macOS 13. The free download includes 6 animated scenes, 8 palettes, an image background, 6 folder icons, 2 widgets and multi-display; Pro, €9.99 once or €1.99 a month with a 7-day trial (checked 7 October 2026), opens all 15 scenes, 44 palettes, 12 widgets and 52 folder-icon patterns. It pauses when the screen sleeps or an app, full screen included, covers the desktop; widgets sit behind windows, as Apple’s do. Rendering is local, with no account to start, no ads and no telemetry. More on Mac+, and a price comparison.
Whichever you test, use the trials first: Wallper’s runs 7 days with every Pro feature, Backdrop’s has no time limit.
macOS 13 or later. Apple Silicon and Intel. Free download; Mac+ Pro €9.99 once or €1.99/month.
Frequently asked questions
Is Wallper better than Backdrop?
Neither wins on every point. Wallper is a $14.99 one-time purchase and starts at macOS 14.6; Backdrop has a trial with no time limit, playlists and a community library. We found no independent test comparing them, so use the decision table and settle the vendors’ contradictions before paying.
Does Wallper or Backdrop have a free version?
Wallper has none: a 7-day trial with every Pro feature and no card, then the app locks until you buy. Backdrop offers a trial with no time limit, capped at 3 watermarked backdrops, your own scenes included. Both per vendor pages checked 7 October 2026.
Can I put a video on the Mac Lock Screen with Wallper or Backdrop?
Both vendors say yes. Wallper requires macOS 26 or later, and version 1.9 or later on macOS 27. Cindori says Backdrop works from macOS 15, but Backdrop’s support page says compatibility “may vary”. No independent test exists, so try it in the trial on your Mac.
Do Wallper and Backdrop work on macOS 14 Sonoma or an older Mac?
Wallper runs from macOS 14.6; Backdrop’s requirements page says macOS 15.0 or later. Neither runs on macOS 13 Ventura. Check Apple’s compatibility list for the newest macOS your model can install.
Which uses less battery, Wallper or Backdrop?
Wallper documents that it pauses on battery by default; Backdrop describes pausing in full-screen apps and unspecified battery optimizations. The vendors’ CPU figures come from different Macs and tools, so they cannot be ranked. Check Activity Monitor on your own Mac.
Is there an option for a Mac that cannot run macOS 14.6 or 15?
Mac+ runs from macOS 13 Ventura on Apple silicon and Intel, but it offers 15 generated scenes, no Lock Screen and no library, and your own video is a Pro feature. Apple’s aerial wallpapers are the free native alternative.
