Leaving Backdrop on Mac: what you keep, what you give up, and what to pick

Backdrop’s free use stops at 3 watermarked backdrops (Cindori, checked 7 October 2026). Wallspace, MacWall and Wallper cost $12.99 to $14.99 once. Free: the aerials under System Settings then Wallpaper, which animate as you lock or unlock, and open-source Phosphene (macOS 26).

Leaving Backdrop means deciding which of its four strengths you still need: a large community library, playlists, an editor for your own video, and Lock Screen video. Aerial and Phosphene are free and play your own videos; Wallspace, MacWall and Wallper cost $12.99 to $14.99 once (checked 7 October 2026) and bring a catalogue. Free has a catch, macOS 26. Mac+, the app behind this site, comes last, with its limits.

Why do people leave Backdrop? Three limits Cindori documents

Free use never expires, but it is small: Cindori says the trial “has no time limit” yet covers only three watermarked backdrops, whether downloaded from its Community Platform or made yourself. The second limit is the price model. The third is sign-in: no Cindori account is needed, but the community library requires being logged in to iCloud on the Mac.

Backdrop plans on Cindori’s store, checked 7 October 2026 (prices shown in euros)
PlanPriceWhat changes
Monthly€1.99 per monthNo watermark; cancel in the License Manager, access runs to the end of the period
Yearly€14.99 per yearSame; the licence key expires if not renewed
Lifetime€29.99 once“All future updates”, no recurring or upgrade fees

Three details change how that reads. The store shows euros, while the download page and Cindori’s reviews show dollars and say the store localises by region, so nothing is converted here. The 14-day refund ends when you activate the licence. And directories lag: at least one still lists “$49 one-time”. A fourth reason is the floor: macOS 15.0 or later, Apple Silicon recommended, and full macOS 27 support per Cindori, while a Wallper roundup of 2 August 2026 still lists macOS 14. For the three-year arithmetic, see our price guide.

What does macOS already do for free, before you install anything?

In System Settings, pick Wallpaper in the sidebar, then a category. Dynamic Wallpapers shift between lighter and darker images through the day. The aerials (Landscape, Cityscape, Underwater and Earth) animate, with a precise limit from Apple: “These aerial images animate as you lock or unlock your Mac.” Unless you change it, the aerial you choose doubles as your screen saver. On Apple’s screen-saver page, click Screen Saver, then “Select Custom” to choose a category, where aerials appear as “slow-motion images”.

If a few seconds of movement when you wake the Mac was all you wanted, stop here. More in our guides to free animated wallpapers and the Lock Screen.

What do you give up when you leave Backdrop, and what do you keep?

You give up the large community library, playlists with schedules, the in-app editor and, according to Cindori, Lock Screen video from macOS 15. You keep your own source videos, and you shed the three-backdrop cap, the watermark and the iCloud dependency.

Lock Screen videoCindori’s claim, from macOS 15; its support page says “may vary”Wallper, Wallspace Pro, MacWall, Wallux, Phosphene: macOS 26

Treat the Lock Screen row with caution. Cindori’s review of 6 October 2026 says Backdrop supports animated Lock Screen wallpapers starting with macOS 15 Sequoia, while its own enabling guide says compatibility may vary. No independent test was found, so macOS 15 is Cindori’s claim, not a measured fact.

What you keep: your original video files (the Cindori pages read document no way to export a scene back to a video file, so the source clip is the copy you control) and a start without an account on Wallper (“no login required”), Wallspace (“no login”), Phosphene or Aerial. What happens to scenes already downloaded when a subscription lapses is not described on the Cindori pages read.

Free and open source: Aerial, Phosphene and Plash, and the macOS 26 catch

Free means no catalogue and, mostly, macOS 26.

Free and open-source options, from their own pages, checked 7 October 2026
AppLicence and priceMinimum macOSWhat you get
PhospheneMIT, free26.0Your own videos in the system wallpaper picker, desktop and Lock Screen; Apple Silicon and Intel
Aerial 4.1.7 (5 October 2026)MIT, free26 on the download page, 15 in the FAQApple’s aerial videos plus your own .mov or .mp4 from a folder
PlashFree, Mac App Store26.4A website as wallpaper, not a video library
moonleafMIT, free; 176 GitHub stars12GIF and video wallpaper manager; not notarized

Two cautions. Phosphene’s README warns that it uses a private Apple framework: “Apple could change this at any major OS release.” Aerial’s pages disagree on the floor, and its FAQ calls the native wallpaper mode in 4.1 a beta. Keep your video files and re-check after a major macOS update. Phosphene installs from a notarized disk image or with brew install --cask phosphene. moonleaf is the only free app here with a macOS 12 floor, but its developer has no Apple Developer account, so macOS treats it as coming from an unidentified developer and you approve it by hand.

Paying once instead: what does each one-time licence include, and where does it stop?

Four catalogue-style apps sell a one-time licence for $9.99 to $14.99. Of the four, only Wallspace keeps a free tier with no time limit; Wallper, MacWall and Wallux start with a short trial.

One-time licences read on vendor pages, checked 7 October 2026 (US dollars, not converted)
AppOne-time priceFree use or trialMinimum macOS
Wallper$14.99, up to 3 Macs7-day trial, then the app locks14.6
Wallspace Pro$12.99 (list $15.49), per MacFree tier “$0 · Forever”; own video and Lock Screen are Pro15
MacWall Pro$12.99, up to 3 MacsFree for 24 hours, then Pro features stop15
Wallux Lifetime$9.99 (or $2.99 a month), up to 3 Macs7-day trial: 3 downloads, 2 personal videos15

Reach differs: Wallspace covers one Mac and sells 2-, 3- and 5-Mac packs at $19.49, $27.28 and $38.97. Refunds run 14 days at Wallper and MacWall, 5 at Wallspace. MacWall’s terms do not say what stays free after the trial.

Vendor pages contradict themselves, so trust the dated pricing page. Wallspace’s February 2026 blog says Pro is $8.99 and custom MP4 is free; its pricing page now says $12.99, marks custom wallpapers as Pro, and lists “No download limits” under Free while its FAQ sells unlimited downloads as an upgrade. Wallux’s home page speaks of a free plan, its pricing page of a 7-day trial, and its track record is not verified here.

Setapp does not help: its catalogue on 7 October holds 24 Hour Wallpaper (100+ dynamic wallpapers, from $14.99 a month, macOS 15) and Magic Window Air (aerial screen savers), but no video-wallpaper catalogue. Do not confuse Cindori’s Backdrop with “Backdrops”, a $29 still-photo app in Setapp’s editorial.

Which constraint decides? Pick by macOS version, Lock Screen, own video, budget or library

macOS version and Lock Screen decide first because they are pass or fail; budget only ranks what is left. Many “best alternatives” lists are vendors ranking themselves or directories without prices, so this table uses only vendor pages read on 7 October 2026.

How do you leave Backdrop cleanly? Five steps

  1. Keep the original file of any clip you turned into a backdrop; the Cindori pages read document no export back to a video file.
  2. Cancel a subscription in Cindori’s License Manager. Access remains until the end of the billing period, so keep using Backdrop until then.
  3. Before deleting the app, turn off its Lock Screen support in its settings. Cindori’s support page calls this the cleanest way to avoid stray “Backdrop” entries under System Settings, Wallpaper; its manual cleanup for an already-deleted app is not reproduced here.
  4. Pick the replacement from the decision table and check the macOS version it requires on its own page.
  5. Set the new wallpaper as that app’s page describes. Of the apps covered, the pages read name only Phosphene, Aerial 4.1 (beta) and Backdrop as appearing under System Settings, Wallpaper; for the rest, follow the vendor’s instructions rather than looking for a macOS menu.

Where does Mac+ fit, and where does it not?

Mac+ is made by the publisher of this site, so read this section with that in mind. The free download is a genuine free tier, not a timed demo, and starting needs no account: exactly six animated scenes, eight palettes, an image as the background, six folder icons, two widgets and support for several displays. Pro unlocks all 15 scenes (drawn on the GPU with Metal), 44 palettes, your own video as the background, 12 widgets and 52 folder-icon patterns. It costs €9.99 once, a launch price, or €1.99 a month after a 7-day trial (checked 7 October 2026). Playback pauses when the screen goes to sleep or when an app covers the desktop, even a full-screen one. Widgets stay behind your windows, the way Apple’s do. It renders locally and carries no ads or telemetry. Requirements: macOS 13 Ventura or later, on Apple Silicon or Intel; PENRA, in France, distributes it as a direct .dmg.

The limits matter more for a Backdrop leaver. There is no Lock Screen support and no screen-saver mode. The 15 scenes are generated and abstract, so there is no video catalogue, no community uploads, and no playlists or scheduling. Your own video is Pro, and no third-party review listing exists yet. If you are leaving Backdrop for its library or its Lock Screen video, Mac+ replaces neither. It fits a narrower case: a free tier with no time limit, a Mac on macOS 13 or 14 while Backdrop, Wallspace, MacWall and Wallux need 15, and starting without an account.

Frequently asked questions

Is there a free alternative to Backdrop for Mac?

Yes, with limits. Apple’s aerial wallpapers are free but animate only as you lock or unlock. Aerial and Phosphene are free, open source and play your own videos, but Phosphene needs macOS 26 and Aerial’s pages say 26 or 15. Wallspace’s free tier is labelled “$0 · Forever”, though own video and Lock Screen are Pro (vendor pages, checked 7 October 2026).

Can I use Backdrop for free without the watermark?

Not on Cindori’s terms. Free use means up to 3 watermarked backdrops with no time limit, and buying removes the watermark. Cindori describes no workaround, and this guide suggests none.

Is there a Mac live wallpaper app with no subscription?

Yes. One-time prices checked on 7 October 2026: Wallux Lifetime $9.99, Wallspace Pro $12.99, MacWall $12.99, Wallper $14.99, plus Backdrop’s lifetime licence at €29.99, which Cindori says includes all future updates. Dollars and euros are not converted, and licences cover different numbers of Macs.

What happens to my Backdrop wallpapers if I stop paying or uninstall?

Cindori says a subscription key expires if the subscription is not renewed, and access stays active until the end of the billing period. Its pages do not say what happens to scenes you already downloaded, so keep your source videos. If you enabled Lock Screen support, turn it off before deleting the app, as Cindori advises.

Which Backdrop alternative works on an older macOS?

On the vendor pages read on 7 October 2026, Mac+ (macOS 13), MotionDesk (13.5), Wallper (14.6), moonleaf (12) and iWallpaper (10.15) list lower floors. Backdrop, Wallspace, MacWall and Wallux need macOS 15; Phosphene and Plash need 26 or later.

Does a Backdrop alternative with Lock Screen video exist for macOS 15?

Only Backdrop claims it. Cindori says it supports animated Lock Screen wallpapers from macOS 15, while its own support page says compatibility may vary. Wallper, Wallspace Pro, MacWall, Wallux and Phosphene state macOS 26, and no independent test was found either way.
