How to customize your MacBook Neo, from wallpaper to menu bar
On a MacBook Neo it all happens in System Settings: Appearance for colours, icon and widget style and folder colour, Wallpaper for the desktop and screen saver, Desktop & Dock and Menu Bar for the rest. No built-in wallpaper keeps moving while you work: that takes an app.
The MacBook Neo runs macOS 27, so it uses the customization settings Apple documents for every Mac, with two details of its own: four case colours to match, and a 13-inch display of 2408 by 1506 pixels to size your wallpaper for. Each change below starts with Apple’s steps and links to our longer guide; Mac+, which we make, comes last. Apple labels checked on 29 October 2026.

What can you customize on a MacBook Neo, and where?
Apple’s MacBook Neo guide for macOS 27 Golden Gate splits personalization into four areas: the look of macOS, the desktop, the Dock and menu bar, and text and pointer size. All of it sits in System Settings, and none of it needs an app. The table maps each change to the place you make it, and to our guide when you want more depth.
| What you change | Where | Going further |

Can your Mac match your Neo’s colour: Silver, Blush, Citrus or Indigo?
Yes, with three colour menus in Appearance. The Neo comes in Silver, Blush, Citrus and Indigo, each with a colour-coordinated keyboard, according to Apple’s product page. On screen, Color sets the colour of buttons, pop-up menus and other controls, Text highlight color sets the colour of selected text, and Folder color sets the colour of folder icons in the Finder. Pick the same family in all three and buttons, selected text and folders follow the case.
Two Neo extras are reported but not in Apple’s guides. MacMost’s tips for new MacBook Neo users, published on 18 March 2026, say that the Neo’s default wallpaper, Mac Blue, sits in the Mac section of Wallpaper in four colour variations, one per finish, and that Appearance adds a colour matching the case to the colour menus. Apple’s Appearance guide for macOS 27 lists no such option, so open both panes on your own Neo: if the case colour is there, choose it; if not, pick the closest colour in each menu.
For the strongest match, set Icon & widget style to Tinted. The folder menu then becomes Icon, widget, & folder color: one colour for icons, widgets and Finder folders together. A last switch in the same pane, Tint window background with wallpaper color, lets colours from the wallpaper subtly tint areas such as toolbars and status bars, so a wallpaper in your finish’s colour carries into your windows.
How do you change the look of icons and widgets on macOS 27?
Open System Settings, click Appearance and choose an option next to Icon & widget style. Apple lists four styles: Default, with opaque items on a light or coloured background depending on the app; Dark, opaque and darkened, either always or following the system appearance; Clear, where items are transparent, in a light, dark or automatic version; and Tinted, opaque items against a dark background in the colour you choose.
macOS 27 adds a Liquid Glass slider to the same pane. Apple describes it for app icons only: drag it all the way left for clear, all the way right for the heaviest tinting, or stop anywhere between. Apple’s MacBook Neo page sums up the result as light or dark mode, colour-tinted icons and a Dock you can enlarge or shrink. If your widgets look grey or washed out rather than see-through, the setting to change is a different one, explained in desktop widgets gray or faded on Mac.
How do you give a folder its own colour, icon or emoji?
Control-click the folder and choose Customize Folder. Apple’s MacBook Neo guide describes changing the folder’s colour and adding an icon or emoji there, then trying combinations until you like the result. To start from an empty folder on the desktop, Control-click the desktop and choose New Folder first.
The default colour of every folder is a separate, system-wide setting: Folder color in Appearance, offered when the style is Default, Dark or Clear. A practical pattern on a small screen: keep the default colour neutral, and give your three or four most-used folders their own colour and symbol so you can spot them without reading. For a picture or pattern instead of a symbol, how to change a folder icon on Mac covers pasting your own image, and how to change a folder color on Mac compares the colour routes.
What wallpaper size fits the MacBook Neo?
2408 by 1506 pixels. Apple’s specifications give the Neo a 13-inch Liquid Retina display with a native resolution of 2408-by-1506 at 219 pixels per inch. That is a ratio of about 1.6 to 1 (2408 ÷ 1506 = 1.599), the shape of a 16:10 screen: a 16:10 picture fills it with almost no crop, while a 16:9 picture loses a strip on each side.
Use an image at least that large, because a smaller file is enlarged to fill the screen and turns soft. Add it in Wallpaper with Add Photo. Apple’s own choices sit on the same page: Dynamic Wallpapers, which brighten and darken with the time of day where you are, the aerials, the Mac gradient shapes and plain Colors. Search results for the Neo’s wallpaper size, sampled on 26 October 2026, were mostly about its default picture, and none stated the display’s pixel size. The Mac wallpaper size guide explains scaled resolutions and the fill and fit options.
Does the MacBook Neo have a live wallpaper?
Not one that keeps moving while you work. In macOS 27 the aerial wallpapers (Landscape, Cityscape, Underwater and Earth) animate as you lock or unlock the Mac, according to Apple’s wallpaper guide, and Dynamic Wallpapers only change their light over the day. The custom options in Wallpaper take photos, image files, folders and albums, not video files.
The search results for this question miss that point: in a sample taken on 26 October 2026, every result about the Neo’s wallpaper was about downloading its still default picture or spotting a hidden detail in it. A wallpaper that moves all the time comes from an app that draws on the desktop, such as Mac+ (last section) or the other apps in live wallpaper apps for Mac, compared. If an Apple aerial stays still after you unlock, the Golden Gate wallpaper guide explains why.
How do you set up widgets on a 13-inch desktop?
Control-click the desktop, choose Edit Widgets, browse the gallery in the sidebar and drag a widget anywhere on the desktop or into Notification Center. To resize one, Control-click it and choose Small, Medium or Large.
A 13-inch screen fills up quickly, so a few habits help: group two or three widgets in one corner, make one larger than the others, and leave the centre to your windows and the wallpaper. A calendar, the weather and a reminders list make a good first trio. Colour is set in Desktop & Dock: with Dim widgets on desktop set to Always, widgets stay monochrome; set it to Never to keep them in full colour. How to add widgets to your Mac desktop walks through the gallery step by step.
How do you customize the Dock, menu bar and Control Center?
For the Dock, open Desktop & Dock and try the options, such as a larger size for apps or another position; Apple’s Neo guide also mentions moving it to the left or right side and hiding it when you are not using it. To add an app or folder, drag it from a Finder window into the Dock. To remove one, drag it toward the Trash in the Dock until Remove from Dock appears.
For the menu bar, open Menu Bar and select the items under Menu Bar Controls: they add status menus, such as Wi-Fi or Do Not Disturb, to the right side of the menu bar. Control Center has its own editor: open it, click Edit Controls, then add the controls you want from the window that appears.
How do you change the screen saver?
In Wallpaper, click Screen Saver, then choose Custom to select your own. By default, the aerial you pick as your wallpaper is also used as the screen saver, so one choice sets both. If the screen saver never starts, see Mac screen saver not working.
Which MacBook Neo setups can you copy?
Three starting points, each built only from the settings above, so none needs an app. Swap any column to taste.
| Setup | Wallpaper | Icons and folders | Widgets and Dock |
|---|---|---|---|
| Colour-matched | A wallpaper in your finish’s colour, such as the Mac Blue variation MacMost reports | Tinted style, colour closest to the case | Two small widgets top left |
| Calm and clear | A Dynamic Wallpaper | Clear style, Liquid Glass slider to the left | One medium calendar |
| Focused | A plain colour from Colors | Default style, one Folder color, symbols on key folders | No widgets, Dock hidden when not in use |

Where Mac+ fits on a MacBook Neo
Mac+ is our app, so weigh this section accordingly; everything above works without it. It runs on the MacBook Neo and on macOS 27, where its developer has tested it, and it covers three of the areas above: the wallpaper, folder icons and desktop widgets.
- Wallpaper: 15 animated scenes rendered on the GPU, recoloured by 44 palettes, or an image; looping your own video is Pro.
- Folder icons: 52 patterns on Apple’s folder shape, or your own image, applied to several folders at once.
- Widgets: 12 desktop widgets, among them a clock, the date, a stopwatch and the weather, in 3 sizes and 4 shapes, on the desktop behind your windows.
- Free tier: 6 animated scenes, 8 palettes, an image background, 6 folder icons, 2 widgets and multi-display.
- Several displays: with an external display, one continuous scene or video can stretch across both screens.
- Battery: very little, never zero. The animation pauses when the display sleeps or an app covers the desktop; the battery guide explains what changes the cost.
- Limits: Mac+ does not change app icons and does not animate the Lock Screen. For colours, icon style, the Dock and the menu bar, use the macOS settings above.
macOS 13 or later, Apple silicon and Intel, MacBook Neo included. Free tier: 6 scenes, 8 palettes, 6 folder icons, 2 widgets; your own video is Pro.
Frequently asked questions
How do I customize my MacBook Neo?
Open System Settings. Appearance sets the colours, the icon and widget style and the folder colour; Wallpaper sets the desktop picture and the screen saver; Desktop & Dock and Menu Bar handle the rest. Widgets go on the desktop with Control-click, then Edit Widgets, and one folder changes with Control-click, then Customize Folder.
Does the MacBook Neo have live wallpaper?
Not a desktop that keeps moving. On macOS 27 the aerial wallpapers animate only as you lock or unlock, and Dynamic Wallpapers change their light over the day. For a wallpaper that moves while you work you need an app; Mac+, which we make, runs on the MacBook Neo.
Can I match my wallpaper and icons to my MacBook Neo’s colour?
Yes. In Appearance, set Color, Text highlight color and Folder color to the same family, or choose the Tinted style and one colour for icons, widgets and folders. MacMost reported on 18 March 2026 that the Neo adds its case colour to these menus and a Mac Blue wallpaper in each finish’s colour; Apple’s guide does not list them, so check your own pane.
What wallpaper size is right for a MacBook Neo?
2408 by 1506 pixels, the native resolution Apple lists for its 13-inch display, at 219 pixels per inch. The ratio is about 16:10, so a 16:10 image of that size or larger fills the screen with almost no crop.
What are good MacBook Neo widget ideas?
Keep two or three widgets in one corner of the 13-inch screen, for example a calendar, the weather and a reminders list, with one larger than the others. Set Dim widgets on desktop to Never in Desktop & Dock if you want them in full colour.
Will a live wallpaper drain my MacBook Neo battery?
It uses some power: low impact, never zero. Mac+ keeps the cost very little: it renders on the GPU and pauses when the display sleeps or an app covers the desktop. Our battery guide explains what raises or lowers the cost.
