Why customize your folder icons on Mac?

It's free and it works, but macOS shows the pasted image as-is: Apple's guide does not describe fitting it to the folder's silhouette, offers no color option for this route, and describes one item at a time. Cropping and centering a properly proportioned icon by hand in an image editor, folder after folder, gets old fast.
- Tags — Finder's colored labels attach a small colored dot next to a file or folder name. On macOS 26 and later, with “Tint folders based on tags” turned on in Finder > Settings > Tags, the folder icon takes that color tint too. Genuinely useful for sorting, but it is a plain color tint: no pattern and no artwork of your own.
- Icon size and view options — Finder lets you enlarge icons or switch views, which helps readability but doesn't change what any individual folder looks like.
