Custom folder icons gone after a macOS update: what actually happened

In almost every case the artwork was not deleted — macOS simply stopped reading it. That is what macOS 26.4 did to Intel Macs on 24 March 2026, and macOS 26.4.1 quietly fixed it on 9 April, with the icons coming back on their own. Update, restart and check before re-applying anything.

A pasted folder icon is two things: the image, hidden inside the folder, and a flag telling Finder to look for it. Break the reading of that pair and the folder goes blue, artwork untouched.

Two problems that look alike: an icon that won’t apply, and icons that left on their own

Two folder-icon complaints circulate on macOS and they share almost nothing. In the first, you are trying to set an icon and it will not take: you paste into Get Info, nothing changes. That one has its own checklist — the clipboard, write permissions, System Integrity Protection, view options — and it lives in folder icon not changing on Mac.

This page is the other one: the icon was applied, held for months or years, then went on its own, usually the morning after an update, across dozens of folders at once. You did nothing, and in most cases nothing you made is gone.

The fixes point in opposite directions. Write permissions explain why one icon never arrived; they have never explained why fifty left at the same moment.

What a custom folder icon is actually made of — and how to check yours is still on disk

Apple’s support pages never say what pasting an image in Get Info writes. Howard Oakley’s history of Finder icon resources does, and the open-source fileicon project agrees: a pasted icon is two things, in two places.

Oakley notes the image is an icns resource with ID -16455, in place since 1984. Documents carry theirs directly, volumes use a .VolumeIcon.icns file, and either half of a folder’s pair can vanish without the other — an icon that returns but looks blurry is a third story.

Which half do you still have? In Terminal, type ls -lab and a space, drag an affected folder in, press Return; then repeat with xattr -l. Both only read.

The macOS 26.4 wave: a timeline with dates

The failure was not cosmetic — pasting a fresh icon on 26.4 failed too, which rules out a stale icon cache — and the icons returned on their own sixteen days later: nobody re-applied anything, the Icon files and their flags had never left the disk.

The pattern was hardware-specific: Mac Pro 7,1, the 2019 rack Mac Pro, the 2019 16-inch MacBook Pro, the 2020 27-inch iMac. M1, M2 and M2 Ultra owners in the same threads saw nothing, and one user’s icons were intact on copies moved to an M1 MacBook Pro.

macOS 26.4.1 fixed it, and Apple never wrote it down

Apple’s What’s new in the updates for macOS Tahoe 26 page gives 26.4.1 one line: “This update provides bug fixes for your Mac.” Its enterprise note names one fix, and not this one: 802.1X Wi-Fi joins failing on M5 MacBook models using content filter extensions.

Others did write it down. MacRumors added a note to its 9 April article saying the release also fixes broken customised folder icons for Intel Mac users on 26.4. Michael Tsai named the cause — a bug introduced in 26.4 where NSWorkspace.icon(forFile:) did not work with custom icons, a regression in the API that reads an icon. Howard Oakley, comparing binaries, found the only change in /System/Library is in the private framework for Icon Services in SwiftUI.

The absence of a fix in a release note is not evidence that nothing was fixed. Install what Software Update offers, then change nothing else for a few days.

Tahoe’s Customize Folder is a different mechanism, and it broke separately

Tahoe offers two ways to change how a folder looks, unrelated underneath. Customize Folder lays a colour plus an SF Symbol or emoji over the standard shape; Oakley documents where that goes: an extended attribute com.apple.icon.folder, flagged syncable (com.apple.icon.folder#S), holding a string like {"emoji":"🔍"} or {"sym":"person.crop.circle"}. That flag survives syncing, iCloud Drive included — hence an asymmetry people find contradictory: after a migration, colours survive and pasted images do not.

The two also fail independently. An Apple Community thread of 25 March 2026 describes colour, symbol and emoji being dropped on folders whose name contains a dot — the author’s example was a folder called “macOS 26.4” — reproduced on three Macs, found independently on MacRumors, and still failing on 15 April after 26.4.1. Apple has said nothing and it is not Intel-only: an open user report. If a colour will not stick to one folder, try a name without a dot.

When it isn’t an update: cloud agents, unmounted volumes, and copies that drop metadata

• A cloud client’s background agent. In the Apple Community thread opened on 28 November 2025, the affected folders carry a badge: Dropbox, OneDrive or Google Drive markers, or an alias arrow. The fix, posted 25 February 2026: System Settings > Login Items > apps which work in the background > deselect Dropbox, then restart — harmless for syncing unless you also quit the app. A OneDrive case on 26 May 2026 needed only a Finder relaunch.
• A volume not mounted at login. If what lost its icon is an alias, this is the usual cause: an August 2024 Apple Developer Forums post describes the startup disk’s icons loading at boot while a password-protected external drive’s do not, leaving aliases nothing to connect to; Apple, per that user, has no fix planned. Mount the volume before concluding anything is lost.
• A copy through a filesystem without extended attributes. Only HFS+ and APFS carry them: onto an exFAT stick, a Windows share or a Git repository the icon does not travel; users report an “Icon?” file appearing inside, nothing drawn. A zip is not a backup of your icons; Time Machine, which preserves extended attributes, is.

macOS 26.6.2 is the current release at the end of August 2026. A single message, dated 15 August 2026, reports the symptom on 26.6.1 — uncorroborated and unacknowledged by Apple, so not a known regression, but a reason to keep your source images.

Re-applying forty icons by hand, versus keeping a set you can restore

Everything above is native macOS, and for a handful of folders it is the right way to work. The case for an app is arithmetic: Get Info takes one folder at a time, and each new image means a round trip through Preview. Forty folders, forty round trips — the real cost of an episode like 26.4.

Mac+ keeps the design assignment on its own side, so restoring a set is selecting the folders and clicking once: 52 designs drawn on the real macOS folder shape, recolourable, or your own image. Two limits — the free tier includes 6 folder icons, the full set and bulk application are paid; and Mac+ writes through the same mechanism described above, so a regression like 26.4’s affects it too. What changes is the cost of restoring, not immunity.

If your icons vanished this morning, do this in order

1. Re-apply nothing for now. If the build you are running has a live regression, you will simply do the work twice.
2. Open System Settings > General > Software Update and install what is offered. Do not assume a release note would have flagged an icon fix — in April 2026 it did not.
3. Restart and look again. In the 26.4.1 episode most icons reappeared at exactly this point, with nothing else done.
4. Still blue? Relaunch the Finder: hold Option, right-click the Finder icon in the Dock, choose Relaunch.
5. Check whether a cloud client is involved: System Settings > General > Login Items & Extensions > Allow in the Background, switch off Dropbox, OneDrive or Google Drive, restart, look again.
6. If the missing icons are on aliases, mount the external or encrypted volume they point at first — an unmounted target is enough to make the alias draw a plain folder.
7. Open Terminal, type "ls -lab" followed by a space and drag one affected folder in. If a file named Icon followed by a carriage return is listed, the artwork is still on disk: you are restoring, not re-creating.
8. Icon file present but no com.apple.FinderInfo? Paste the same source image through Get Info — one step, and it rewrites the flag. No Icon file at all? Restore from Time Machine, which preserves extended attributes.
