For your own image, copy it, select the folder, press ⌘ + I to open **Get Info**, click the small icon at the top of the window, below the title bar, and press ⌘V. On macOS 26 Tahoe, you can instead Control-click the folder and choose **Customize Folder** to add a color plus a stock symbol or an emoji.

There are two ways to change a folder's icon on macOS, and which one you want depends on what you mean by “icon”. Since macOS 26 Tahoe, Finder can put a color plus a stock symbol or an emoji on any folder from a **Customize Folder** panel — two clicks, nothing to install. If you want your *own* artwork on the folder, that still goes through Get Info, and it's also the only route on macOS 13, 14 and 15. Here's both, how to undo either, and what to do when it doesn't work.

The end result: two folders carrying a custom icon instead of the default macOS blue.

## The native way on macOS 26 Tahoe: Customize Folder

Control-click (or right-click) a folder in Finder and choose **Customize Folder**. The panel that opens has a row of colored circles at the top and a list of stock symbols underneath, grouped into categories: People, Animals & Nature, Food & Drinks, Activity, Travel & Places, Objects and Symbols. Click a circle to tint the folder, click a symbol to stamp it on the front. The same panel is available from the Action button in the Finder toolbar or from the **File** menu with the folder selected.

There's a search field if you already know the symbol you want, an **Emoji** button that swaps the symbol list for the full emoji picker, and a Clear button, as MacMost, Macworld and Tom's Guide call it, to remove the symbol again (Apple's page doesn't document removing a Customize Folder color, symbol or emoji). This is the fastest way to make a folder recognizable at a glance, and it needs no image file at all — but it can only ever give you Apple's glyphs or an emoji, never your own picture.

## For your own artwork — and on macOS 13, 14 or 15: Get Info

If you want a real custom icon — a logo, a screenshot, an illustration, an icon set you downloaded — you paste an image over the folder's icon through the **Get Info** window. This has worked for years and still works on Tahoe, and it's the only method available if your Mac is on macOS 15 or earlier, where the Customize Folder panel doesn't exist yet.

The one trick people miss: you paste into the *small* icon preview at the top of the Get Info window, below the title bar, not onto the folder itself and not onto the large preview lower down. Click that small icon once so it picks up a blue highlight, then press ⌘V.

**To revert a pasted icon:** select the folder, press **⌘ + I**, click the small icon at the top of the window once so it's highlighted, then choose **Edit > Cut**. That is the step Apple documents under “Restore the original icon for a file or folder”; many guides press Delete instead, which Apple's page doesn't mention. The folder returns to the default macOS folder look. A color, symbol or emoji from Customize Folder is a separate layer that Apple's page doesn't cover: [how to restore the default folder icon on a Mac](https://macplus.pro/restore-default-folder-icon-mac.html) explains what undoes each.

## What Customize Folder can't do

Before you decide which route you need, here's where the native panel stops:

- **Stock glyphs and emoji only.** There's no way to load your own image into the Customize Folder panel. For real artwork you're back to Get Info.
- **Seven colors, fixed.** The circles are the Finder tag colors — red, orange, yellow, green, blue, purple and gray. No color picker, no hex value.
- **Some folders are excluded.** Apple blocks customization on the Applications, Library, System and Users folders. Aliases can't be customized either, and the option doesn't appear from Finder search results.
- **Colors are tags underneath.** Picking a circle also applies that Finder tag, and editing the tags in **Finder > Settings > Tags** changes the folder colors with them.
- **It can appear greyed out.** Because of that tag coupling, the menu item is widely reported to stay dimmed until at least one favorite tag exists.
- **It doesn't show everywhere.** Custom colors and symbols don't carry into the Dock, the Finder sidebar, Spotlight results or aliases.

## The step beyond native: style every folder at once with Mac+

For a single folder with an emoji on it, Customize Folder is the right tool and this section isn't for you. Get Info is equally fine for one or two custom icons. It's the third case that gets tedious: hunting down good-looking icons, cropping them square, exporting transparent PNGs and pasting them one at a time until a whole desktop matches.

[Mac+](https://macplus.pro/mac-folder-icons.html) is a native macOS app built for that case. It ships 52 handcrafted patterns across 24 families and 44 color palettes, all mapped onto the real macOS folder shape rather than pasted on as flat stickers, so they still read as proper Mac folders. You can also drop in your own image and Mac+ fits it to the folder shape for you — the part the native panel simply doesn't do.

The other difference is volume: select a batch of folders and apply one style to all of them in a single action instead of repeating the steps per folder, then reset any of them to Apple's default blue with one click. Everything renders locally, no telemetry. The free tier includes 6 folder icons, 8 palettes and 2 widgets, so you can try it before deciding.

## Common problems (and fixes)

- **Paste does nothing:** you clicked the big preview instead of the tiny icon at the top of the Get Info window, below the title bar. Click that small one until it has a blue highlight, then ⌘V.
- **Customize Folder is greyed out:** open **Finder > Settings > Tags** and drag at least one tag into the Favorite Tags area, then Control-click the folder again. Check too that it's a real folder — aliases and search results don't offer the option.
- **There's no Customize Folder in the menu:** you're on macOS 15 or earlier. Check About This Mac; the feature arrived with macOS 26 Tahoe. Use the Get Info method instead.
- **The icon looks blurry:** use a square image of at least 512×512 px. macOS scales it down cleanly but can't add detail to a small source.
- **You want a transparent background:** the image needs to already be a PNG with transparency — macOS won't remove a white background for you.
- **“You don't have permission”:** the folder is locked or owned by the system. Check the Sharing & Permissions section at the bottom of the same Get Info window — and remember Applications, Library, System and Users are off-limits by design.
- **The icon disappeared after moving the folder:** a pasted custom icon lives in Finder metadata, and Apple doesn't say that iCloud Drive carries it to your other Macs; The Eclectic Light Company reports that in iCloud Drive it appears only on the Mac that applied it, so apply it again on each Mac. A color, symbol or emoji from Customize Folder is reported to travel through iCloud Drive (MacMost, The Eclectic Light Company). Zipping, archiving or routing a folder through a third-party cloud service can strip either kind. If every icon vanished right after a macOS update instead, see [icons lost after a macOS update](https://macplus.pro/custom-folder-icons-disappeared-after-macos-update.html).
- **The icon looks right in Finder but plain in the Dock or the sidebar:** each has its own guide, [why a custom folder icon looks plain in the Dock](https://macplus.pro/custom-folder-icon-dock-mac.html) and [why it does not appear in the Finder sidebar](https://macplus.pro/custom-folder-icon-not-showing-finder-sidebar.html).

## Recap: set a custom folder icon with Get Info in 5 steps

1. Get the image you want to use — a square PNG of at least 512×512 px works best. Open it in Preview and press ⌘C to copy it.
2. In Finder, click the folder once to select it, then press ⌘ + I to open Get Info.
3. Click the small folder icon at the top of the Get Info window, below the title bar, so it shows a blue highlight.
4. Press ⌘V to paste. The folder's icon changes immediately. Close the window — you're done.
5. To revert, reopen Get Info, select that same small icon and choose Edit > Cut (the step Apple documents; many guides press Delete instead).

macOS 13 or later. Apple Silicon and Intel. Free tier, no account required.

## Frequently asked questions

### Can you change a folder icon on Mac without an app?

Yes, two ways. On macOS 26 Tahoe, Control-click the folder and choose Customize Folder to add a color plus a stock symbol or emoji. For your own artwork on any recent macOS, select the folder, press ⌘ + I, click the small icon at the top of the Get Info window, below the title bar, and paste an image with ⌘V.

### What is Customize Folder on macOS Tahoe?

It's the folder customization panel Apple added in macOS 26 Tahoe. Control-click a folder and choose Customize Folder to pick one of the Finder tag colors and a stock symbol from categories such as People, Animals, Food, Activity, Travel, Objects and Symbols — or click Emoji to use an emoji instead.

### Can I use my own image with Customize Folder?

No. The panel only offers Apple's stock symbols and emoji. For a custom picture — a logo, an illustration, a downloaded icon — use the Get Info paste method, or an app like [Mac+](https://macplus.pro/mac-folder-icons.html) that fits your own image onto the real folder shape.

### Why is Customize Folder greyed out?

The option is tied to Finder tags and is widely reported to stay dimmed until you have at least one favorite tag. Open Finder > Settings > Tags, drag a tag into the Favorite Tags area, then try again. Aliases and Finder search results never offer it.

### How do I reset a folder icon back to normal?

For a pasted custom icon: open Get Info (⌘ + I), select the small icon at the top of the window and choose Edit > Cut, the step Apple documents (many guides press Delete instead). For a Tahoe color, symbol or emoji, Apple's page documents no undo; MacMost, Macworld and Tom's Guide describe a Clear button in Customize Folder. The full map is in [how to restore the default folder icon on a Mac](https://macplus.pro/restore-default-folder-icon-mac.html).

### What image size should a Mac folder icon be?

Use a square image of at least 512×512 pixels for a crisp result. A transparent PNG looks best because the background won't cover the folder shape.

### Which folders can't have a custom icon?

The macOS Applications, Library, System and Users folders are excluded from Customize Folder, and system-owned folders will also refuse a pasted icon with a permissions warning. Check the permissions section at the bottom of the Get Info window if a folder you own won't budge.
