Softorino’s Folder Colorizer is sold through its Universal License subscription; Folder Colorizer Pro is a separate $3.99 Mac App Store listing. Before paying, macOS 26 or later can color one folder at a time with **Customize Folder**.

“Folder Colorizer for Mac” can mean three different apps, with three developers or editions and three prices. Softorino’s direct Folder Colorizer is sold only through its Universal License subscription; its separate Mac App Store Pro edition is listed at $3.99, while another developer’s Mac App Store app is $1.99. Before paying, macOS 26 or later can color a folder, add a symbol or emoji, and macOS 26/27 can set a default folder color system-wide. Here is how to identify the editions, compare their dated prices and choose an alternative.

Folder colors on Mac: native controls and app choices compared.

## Three Mac apps share the Folder Colorizer name

Start with the seller and store listing; the name alone does not identify the product. The direct **Folder Colorizer** on Softorino’s site is a Mac utility requiring macOS 11 Big Sur or later. Softorino says it adds colors, emoji, decals and pictures, supports bulk color changes, and can reset a folder. Its own store page says the app is available only through the Universal License, not as an individually licensed purchase. The first-year offer shown with the seasonal coupon on 23 September 2026 was $9.99 against a displayed $39.96; the page does not publish the renewal price. Do not read the coupon price as the normal price.

**Folder Colorizer Pro** is Softorino’s separate Mac App Store edition. The US listing showed $3.99 and macOS 11.0 or later; it also described colors, stock photos, emoji, decals, multi-folder changes and reset controls. Softorino’s listing says its Universal app supports Apple silicon and Intel. The listing’s latest stated compatibility update was for macOS Tahoe; it did not claim macOS 27 compatibility on the date checked.

A third listing, also named **Folder Colorizer**, is from Langui.net developer 兰桂 吴, not Softorino. Its US App Store price was $1.99, and it requires macOS 10.10 or later. Its description says it colors folders and can restore color in batches; its developer explains that it creates an icon file inside each selected folder and supports folders only.

Searches also surface Softorino’s Folder Colorizer 2 and ArcticLine’s Folder Marker, both Windows products; Folder Marker lists Windows requirements, not macOS.

*Mac apps listed as Folder Colorizer (prices checked 23 September 2026)*

| Listing | Seller and store | Price shown | Requirement |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| Folder Colorizer | Softorino, direct | Universal License subscription; $9.99 first year with coupon against $39.96 | macOS 11+ |
| Folder Colorizer Pro | Softorino, Mac App Store | $3.99 | macOS 11+ |
| Folder Colorizer | Langui.net, Mac App Store | $1.99 | macOS 10.10+ |

## Try macOS’s own folder color tools before paying

Since macOS 26, the Finder can change an individual folder’s color without a separate app. Select a folder, then choose **Customize Folder**. You can click a colored circle, select a symbol, or choose **Emoji**. This is the sensible first try if your goal is a colored folder or a quick visual marker. Apple does not state how many color choices there are, so we will not attach a count to them. The native control does not customize protected folders such as Applications, Library, System and Users.

There is also a system-wide default. In **System Settings**, open **Appearance** and set **Folder color**. Apple says this option appears when Icon & widget style is set to Default, Dark or Clear. That changes the color used for Finder folder icons; it is different from assigning a particular color to each folder. The native guide also documents a Tinted appearance option for icon, widget and folder color These controls make macOS 26/27 more capable than older comparison articles suggest.

On macOS 13 through 15, Apple’s documented route for a personal picture is to copy an image in **Preview**, select the folder, open File > Get Info, click the small icon at the top, then use Edit > Paste. To restore the default, select the small icon and use Edit > Cut. This image method is useful when a preset color is not enough, but it is a different workflow from the newer per-folder color controls. For the complete walkthrough and version notes, see [how to change a folder’s color on Mac](https://macplus.pro/how-to-change-folder-color-mac.html).

Apple’s built-in route is free and requires no download. It is one folder at a time for the new color controls; Apple does not document a native batch-color command or a library of stock photos here. If those limits decide the choice, compare the specific app editions below rather than assuming the shared name means shared features.

## What Softorino’s Folder Colorizer costs in 2026

The direct Softorino product and the Mac App Store edition are separate purchasing choices. The direct Folder Colorizer product page says that it is available only as part of the Universal License. Softorino describes that license as a subscription combining its apps; its store page offered a 24-hour free trial and a 30-day money-back guarantee. On 23 September 2026, the page displayed a seasonal first-year price of $9.99, with $39.96 shown as the comparison price. The same page listed other plan figures, but the renewal amount for that offer was not stated, so treat the promotion as a dated first-year quote, not a durable total cost.

Folder Colorizer Pro is an App Store listing with a displayed $3.99 price and no in-app-purchase section in that listing. Its feature list includes more than ten million colors, stock images from Unsplash, Pexels and Pixabay, emoji, decals, changing multiple folders, and undo or restore controls. It was version 4.11.10 in the US listing, last updated 27 September 2025, and first released in December 2022.

The $1.99 Langui.net listing has a narrower description: color folders, restore colors in batch, and folders only. It was version 1.3.4, updated 12 May 2026; its history records Apple silicon support and a Finder extension. The developer says the app creates an icon file inside each folder it changes. If you prefer to avoid an app that modifies folders this way, use Apple’s native controls or inspect the app’s documentation before choosing.

## Mac folder-color alternatives, side by side

*Alternatives and displayed prices checked 23 September 2026*

| Option | Strength | Price shown | Minimum macOS |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| macOS Customize Folder | Color, symbol or emoji, folder by folder | Free | 26 |
| Tintd 2 | 11,000+ icons, name-based assignment, Folder Watcher | $9.99 shown against $49.99; pay once | 14 |
| Folder Designer | Icons, patterns, background colors; one-click restore | $4.99 US / 5,99 € France | 11.5 |
| folderify | Native-style icons from a mask; command line and scriptable | Free, MIT | Not stated |
| Mac+ | 52 folder-icon patterns and 44 palettes, alongside other desktop features | €9.99 once or €1.99/month; 7-day trial | 13 |

**Tintd 2** is the icon-library choice. Its site says it can choose an icon and color from a folder name, work offline, and watch folders; its Folder Watcher needs Full Disk Access. The current download requires macOS 14 or later and is described as a one-time purchase. The price endpoint showed $9.99 next to $49.99 on 23 September 2026; that display does not establish a normal future price. The older Mac App Store edition is distinct: free with in-app purchases and a macOS 13 requirement.

**Folder Designer** from FIPLAB combines icons, patterns and background colors, and its [publisher page](https://fiplab.com/apps/folder-designer-for-mac) documents one-click restore to the default appearance. The US App Store listing showed $4.99 and macOS 11.5 or later; the French listing showed 5,99 €. Its page says it was updated for macOS Tahoe. These are the vendor’s listed capabilities, not a test of macOS 27.

**folderify** takes the hands-on route. Its [open-source repository](https://github.com/lgarron/folderify) documents generating native-style icons from a mask image, a Homebrew install, an ImageMagick dependency and the MIT license. It is free and scriptable, but the project does not state a minimum macOS version, and each folder can have only one assigned icon version. This suits people comfortable with Terminal, not someone looking for a Finder color picker.

The [Mac folder icon comparison](https://macplus.pro/mac-folder-icons-comparison.html) covers other utilities; for batch workflows, see [changing multiple folder icons at once](https://macplus.pro/change-multiple-folder-icons-at-once-mac.html).

## Choose by the job you need done

Choose the built-in macOS control to recolor folders, add a symbol or emoji, or change Finder’s default color without a purchase. On macOS 13–15, Apple’s Get Info and Preview workflow can put a picture on one folder. Apple has not documented whether native customizations sync through iCloud or survive copying.

Choose Softorino’s direct edition for its colors, photos, decals and multi-folder tools if the Universal License subscription suits you. Its $9.99 figure here was the first-year seasonal price on 23 September 2026, not a renewal quote. Pro is a separate $3.99 App Store listing.

Langui.net suits basic coloring and batch restore if its icon-file approach is acceptable. Tintd 2 offers a large icon catalogue and name-based choices, with Full Disk Access required for Folder Watcher. Folder Designer offers patterns and background colors with one-click restore. folderify is free and scriptable for people comfortable creating mask-based icons.

Those explain the underlying Finder method; this comparison is about which named colorizer or alternative fits it.

## Where Mac+ fits—and where it does not

Mac+ is a desktop-customization app that includes folder styling: the published feature set lists 52 folder-icon patterns and 44 palettes. It also includes 15 GPU-rendered animated scenes, support for using your own videos as wallpaper, and 12 desktop widgets. Its price on the site is €9.99 once or €1.99 per month with a seven-day trial. The app requires macOS 13 Ventura or later and supports Apple silicon and Intel; it is made in France by PENRA. These details are from the publisher’s site, checked 23 September 2026.

For this specific job, the limits matter as much as the list: Mac+ offers patterns and palettes, not emoji, a stock-photo library or a symbol library. It is downloaded from macplus.pro rather than the Mac App Store, and its macOS 13 minimum is newer than several Folder Colorizer listings. If you only need Apple’s free color control, you do not need Mac+. If you need its broader desktop tools as well as folder styling, it can consolidate those jobs. The native route remains the simplest way to color a folder on macOS 26 or later; the comparison is about the extra library or workflow you actually need.

Before downloading any app, check the current store listing and system requirement: prices, trial offers and versions can change after this 23 September 2026 snapshot.

## Try Apple’s native folder controls

1. In Finder, select the folder and choose Customize Folder from its toolbar controls.
2. Click a colored circle to set a color, select a symbol from the list, or click Emoji and choose an emoji.
3. To set the default folder color instead, open System Settings > Appearance > Folder color. This option appears when Icon & widget style is Default, Dark or Clear.
4. For a picture on macOS 13–15, open it in Preview and choose Edit > Copy. Select the folder, choose File > Get Info, click the small icon, then choose Edit > Paste. To undo, select that icon and choose Edit > Cut.

Free download. Check the current macOS requirement and edition before installing.

## Frequently asked questions

Check the edition and seller before paying.

### Is Folder Colorizer Pro the same as Folder Colorizer?

Folder Colorizer Pro is Softorino’s separate Mac App Store edition. The direct Softorino Folder Colorizer is sold through the Universal License. A different $1.99 Mac App Store listing named Folder Colorizer is from Langui.net developer 兰桂 吴.

### Does Folder Colorizer work on macOS Tahoe?

Softorino’s Mac App Store release notes say Folder Colorizer Pro was updated to support the latest macOS Tahoe versions. The listings checked on 23 September 2026 did not state that any of these apps had been tested on macOS 27.

### Can I change folder colors on a Mac without an app?

Yes. On macOS 26 or later, select a folder and choose Customize Folder to assign a color, symbol or emoji. Apple also documents a system-wide Folder color setting. On macOS 13–15, the documented native option is to paste an image onto the folder icon in Get Info.

### Is there a one-time-purchase alternative to Folder Colorizer?

The checked listings included Tintd 2 at $9.99 shown alongside $49.99, Folder Designer at $4.99 in the US, and Mac+ at €9.99 lifetime. The separate App Store Folder Colorizer listings showed $3.99 and $1.99. Prices can change; these were checked 23 September 2026.

### Do colored folders keep their color on another Mac?

Softorino says its folder styles travel with a folder or external drive. Apple’s cited native guides do not establish that native customizations sync through iCloud or survive copying, and this comparison does not generalize Softorino’s claim to other apps.
