## Folder icons

Changing a folder icon on a Mac is a copy-paste in the Get Info window — except the gesture silently fails about half the time. The real causes: you copied the file’s icon representation instead of its pixels, the folder is system-protected, the icon cache wasn’t flushed, or the volume is exFAT. ## Desktop widgets

Since Sonoma you can place widgets straight on the desktop: drag one out of Notification Centre and it fades back when an app comes forward. Two settings in Desktop & Dock decide everything — “Show Widgets” (set to “On Desktop”) and “Show Desktop”, which controls what a click on the wallpaper does. One of those two explains almost every case of widgets that “disappeared”.
